"if i had a chance, i'd ask the world to dance"
It took 30 years in the making, but I must say I celebrated my birthday just the way I wanted it. It started off shaky, literally, when I was in bed shaking off a very high fever last Monday. Sotiris was in town for the week, too. I haven't talked about him much recently, but I have a really good feeling about him. I think I'm keeping him :) Thursday night, Sot took me to SONA for dinner. The food was wonderful (all SIX courses plus dessert) and the service was incredible. Every person who waited on us - yes, more than one server per table - greeted me a happy birthday. Then, we drove to Makai's in Santa Monica where the real celebration started. My friend Richard and I have the same birthday, so we turned 30 together with our family and friends. A photo taken of Richard and I from a wedding last year was the decoration on our birthday cake. It was also the first time a member of the Cuenco fam (Mike) met Sot. They got along really well, so I'm happy. I knew that since it was partly Richard's party, that the Patron shots would also be flowing all night long. And it did. I had 3 double shots by the end of the night. Good times. Until one of his friends decided it would be funny to put my face in the cake at the end of the night. Not funny, after all.
The next day, Friday, I held a dinner party at Tokyo Table for more friends. Again, good food, good company, GREAT lychee martinis. It was more intimate than Thursday night, but still a lot of fun. Cake number two was brought out, and this time it was designed by Errica, Kli and Jeff. I opened one HILARIOUS gift after another from everyone, including a Gangsta Rap Coloring Book from Jen, an Ambrosia record from my bro, a David Beckham Adidas shirt from Jeff, and a T-shirt from Heidi that says "I don't know, I don't watch Frasier." (It's an inside joke). So. Much. Fun.
Saturday morning, I drove up to Ventura for a day at the beach with my family, Sot and the Gucci Squad. This time, Sot was gonna meet my parents - and it was fine. It was nice and sunny, and the beach was not crowded. We pitched a beach tent and my mom served Filipino food. Mike brought a mini-keg and baked (cake number 3) a ginormous carrot cake with the Hollywood sign decorated across it. We played volleyball (using dried up seaweed as a net), Pictionary and swam until sunset. It was a beautiful and memorable way to end the celebration. Thirty has been fabulous so far.
When I got in to work this morning, I received a card my mom sent on my birthday. It read:
"30 years ago, Nanay was with me at the hospital and she was looking for Dad to tell him that we have a new baby boy. When finally she found him, he already knew and had been distributing chocolates to the nurses and other staff at the hospital. That's why we were treated like VIP's there. Both Candy and Michan were thrilled to have a baby brother....even now they are proud to have you for a brother. Have fun and enjoy your 3-day celebration.
Love,
Mom"
